Classify Plants and Animals

Life on Earth can be broken into two large groups, or classifications. These are Plants and Animals.

Plants

There are two main types of plants: Flowering Plants and Non-Flowering Plants.

Flowering Plants are plants that produce seeds in flowers.

Here are some examples of flowering plants:

Non-Flowering Plants are plants that do not produce flowers. Non-flowering plants produce their seeds in cones, or they produce spores instead.  Here are some examples of non-flowering plants:

Animals

There are two main types of animals: Vertebrates and Invertebrates.

Vertebrates are animals that have a backbone. There are 5 main types of vertebrates: Fish, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds, and Mammals.

Invertebrates are animals that do not have a backbone. The largest group of invertebrates is the Arthropods.

Arthropods are invertebrates that have body segments, jointed legs, and a hard outer covering to protect them. Insects are part of the group of Arthropods. Insects are arthropods that have three body segments, six legs, and two antennae.
