Author's Purpose

Author's Purpose is the author's reason for writing something. Authors always have a reason for writing. They have a message that they want to send to their readers. Sometimes the author will tell you their reason for writing. But, most times, you will have to figure it out.

There are four basic types of author's purpose:

1. To Entertain
2. To Explain
3. To Inform
4. To Persuade

When an author has written to entertain, the author has written something for you to enjoy. Usually, the author will write a fiction story to entertain.

When an author has written to explain, the author is giving directions or telling you how to do something. Instructions and directions are examples of writing to explain.

When an author has written to inform, the author is giving you information about something. Non-fiction and textbooks are examples of writing to inform.

When an author has written to persuade, the author wants you to believe or do something. Commercials on T.V. and book reviews are examples of writing to persuade.
